Some angry youth in the Oke Ilewo area of Abeokuta, Ogun State on Thursday went on rampage, protesting the killing of one Gbenga Okesola, 22 to death by a bullion van.
The deceased who was riding on a motorcycle was hit around the OPIC Roundabout where he was worked as an apprentice. He was on his way to a computer shop around the area to buy a memory card when tragedy struck.
Gbenga reportedly fell under the van and was dragged on the road for about five kilometres.
It was gathered that some SPY policemen escorting the van were said to have dragged the victim, who was gasping for air from under the van and dumped him beside the road before taking off.
The action infuriated youths and other commercial motorcyclists around and they started a violent protest, where they allegedly attacked some law enforcement agents.
According to an eyewitness, the irate protesters engaged the police officers deployed to the area in a fight as they hauled stones, bottles and other dangerous items on them.
Confirming the tragic incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, stated that the said bullion van belonged to one of the new generation banks in the state, adding that it was driven by a SPY official, trained by the police but paid by the bank.
The PPRO added that the driver of the bullion van has been apprehended while the van is currently in the custody of the police.
“The vehicle dragged the rider for about five kilometres, and the police escort attached to the van pulled out the man and abandoned him. This was what angered the people.
“Presently, we have arrested the driver of the bullion van and the vehicle too is in our custody. The law will take its course and justice will be done,”Adejobi said.
