Former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Tsav has described Tuesday’s visit of Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State to Agatu, eight weeks after the herdsmen’s invasion that claimed over 500 lives, as belated.

Tsav, who spoke to Vanguard, expressed disappointment that the Governor as the Chief Security Officer of the state failed to visit the area after the killings.

“That was responsible for his inability to paint a true picture of the situation in the crisis zone,” Tsav said.

”The Governor is always lagging behind like a tail, it is not a good development for our state, the people expected better than what they are seeing presently.

“He should rise up to the occasion as the Chief Security Officer of the state and stop playing politics with the lives of people. I am disappointed; his security adviser is not helping him at all.”

On his part, social critic, Dr. Smart Ichor, also decried what he termed the Governor’s lackadaisical attitude to the crisis.

He said, “I think the Governor should have visited the area long time ago as the Chief Security Officer of the state. I’m sure he was prompted by the United Nation’s visit during which they described the killings as a ‘genocide’.

“The Governor should have been the first to visit the area and appropriately inform the President of the situation but he failed to do so. That to a large extent is responsible for why the President has shown lukewarm attitude to the killings in Agatu and other parts of the State.”
