Yobe Government turns 3-star hotel to accommodation for student doctors

Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe State has disclosed of plans by his administration to allocate a 3-star hotel, which is nearing completion in the state capital, Damaturu to be used as accommodation for doctors and medical students, who will serve in the newly built 200-bed capacity hospital, also situated in the state capital.

He said plans were underway to upgrade the new hospital into a teaching hospital.

The Governor made this known on Tuesday during an inspection visit to the 3-star hotel and the 200-bed capacity hospital in Damaturu metropolis.

Gaidam said converting the new hospital into a teaching hospital was designed to provide quality tertiary medical care to the people of the state.

He said he would do everything necessary to make the newly built hospital meet the standards of a teaching hospital.

Gaidam explained that the hospital equipment worth N2.5 billion had been provided and was being installed in the hospital.

“I am impressed with the phase of completion work going on at the hotel and the hospital from my last inspection visits. I want the contractors and supervising officials to step up efforts to ensure timely completion”, Gaidam said.

The governor added that the state government would provide support to the Yobe State University towards establishing a medical faculty by ensuring that all the requirements and conditions of the National Universities Commission in that regard were met.

The Governor assured that the provision of quality and affordable medical services was an important objective of his administration.

“We have recruited additional doctors, nurses and midwives and we have built additional housing accommodation for them. I have left the door open for further recruitment by the hospitals management board so that we have some of the best hands to manage our healthcare sector.

“We will do everything that is required to attract and retain professionals in the sector”, the governor said. .
