Yahoo, yahoo: Osun University students protest as EFCC operatives reportedly invade hostels

There was a palpable tension in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, as students from the Osun State University went on rampage and blocked the popular Osogbo-Ikirun expressway.

According to one of the protesting students, Adeola Tijani, the students were protesting an alleged invasion of their hostels by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) in search of internet fraudsters, known as Yahoo Yahoo boys in the local parlance.

According to Tijani, “Armed EFCC security operatives, who came from Ibadan, stormed the students’ hostels, which is outside the school premises around 7:00am and arrested about 35 students.

“The arrested students were said to have been whisked away to EFCC office in Ibadan. They came with some other security operatives that came to the hostel to make the arrests.”

He said about 35 of his colleagues were arrested with some non-students, who were living around the area, were whisked away.

It took the intervention of police and men of the Department of State Services to disperse the protesting students.

Mr Adedayo Adeyemi, the institution’s Public Relations Officer confirmed the arrest and the protest, adding that the management of the University were already trying to find out the cause of the arrest by the EFCC.

He said the school management had been appealing to the students to be peaceful pending the outcome of their investigation.

Also speaking in a telephone interview with DAILY POST, DSP Folashade Odoro, the Osun Police Command Public Relations Officer, said police officers have been sent to the area to protect the students.

Odoro, however, said the command did not know anything about the arrest of the students.

“We don’t know anything about the arrest. Our men were only sent there to protect the students,” Odoro said.
