Xenophobic Attack: Why Buhari must take a stand – Reps

The House of Representatives has called on President Muhammadu Buharui to take a stand against the persistent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Speaking during plenary, a member from Edo State, Serguis Ogun frowned at the treatment meted out to Nigerians in South African.

According to Ogun, “I want us as a House to condemn it and I also want our government to take a stand on it.

“How can we say that we are the giant of Africa when in other African countries, our citizens are being killed?”

The Minority Leader, Leo Ogor, described the xenophobic attack on Nigerians as “unjustifiable.”

Urging the South African government to take responsibility for securing lives within its borders, Ogor said, “This isn’t the first time this is happening. South Africans continue to kill Nigerians for no justifiable reason and this is completely unacceptable.”

This is coming at a time when the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, called on the South African government to take decisive and definitive measures to protect Nigerian citizens and other Africans within South African borders.

The aide said the seeming silence of the South African government was pushing Nigeria to the wall and may warrant sanctions.

She equally called on the African Union to intervene urgently in the renewed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other Africans in South Africa.
