Xenophobia: Massive security around Lagos malls, MTN headquarters

The reprisal attacks in Nigeria in reaction to the ongoing xenophobia in South Africa have caused increased security presence at some popular Lagos malls.

Similar cover is being provided at the MTN headquarters at Falomo in Ikoyi.

DAILY POST reports that men of the Nigeria Police are protecting Novare Mall at Sangotedo, Circle Mall at Jakande near Osapa London, Maryland Mall, Shoprite in Surulere and Ikeja City Mall.

The spots all have South African businesses including Shoprite, Pep Store, MTN, among others.

Our correspondent who went round town between 9pm and 11pm noticed heavy reinforcement.

Armoured Personnel Carriers and police vehicles were strategically stationed at the locations.

At Jakande, a police pickup truck and another sports utility vehicle burned by protesters were seen.

Shattered windscreen, sticks and stones littered the traffic light area.

Meanwhile, the federal government has appealed to Nigerians to stop retaliation.

In a statement, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said the development would hurt the country more.

On Tuesday, President Muhammadu Buhari expressed “deep concern,” over the attacks on Nigerian citizens and property.

He instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, to summon the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria and get a brief on the situation.

Buhari has also despatched a Special Envoy to President Cyril Ramaphosa on the situation.

The envoy is “expected to arrive in Pretoria latest Thursday, September 5, 2019”, the presidency said in a statement.
