World Students’ Day: NANS mourns two students crushed to death by trailer in Benue

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has described the 2018 World Students’ day as a day of mourning to honour two pupils of LGEA Primary School Low Cost, Makurdi who were crushed to death after truck loaded with bags of beans fell on them.

The apex students’ body decried the deplorable nature of Nigerian roads, saying that such deaths around the country could be avoided if government was responsive and responsible.

This was contained in a press statement signed by the National Public Relations Officer of the union, Comrade Okereafor Bestman Opeyemi, a copy which was sent to DAILY POST on Tuesday.

The statement read, “The attention of the apex students, governing body has been drawn to a tragic incident involving two Nigerian students who were crushed to death when a truck loaded with bags of beans fell on them.

“NANS is, however, of the view that the accident and many others that has claimed the lives of many Nigerian students would have been averted if the federal and state governments had reacted to several of our appeals to fix roads around the country.

“This is not the first time we are recording this type of accident in the country, but after every accident, we will cry and government will make promises to rehabilitate the road which often ends up in futility.

“We hereby call on the leadership of the NURTW and RTEAN to ensure continuous sensitization of their drivers. It is, however, unfortunate that the FRSC has derailed from its core objectives to an “extortion commission” collecting bribes from drivers instead of working to keep the road accident -free.

“Following this development, NANS is hereby declaring the 2018 World Students’ day in Nigeria as a “NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING”, the statement added
