World Cup 2018: Febregas reacts to Spain’s ouster from Russia

Chelsea midfielder, Cesc Fabregas has reacted to Spain ouster from the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Spain was knocked out of the tournament by Russia yesterday and Fabregas said he was disappointed by the performance of the 2010 winners.

With the game level at 1-1 after 120 minutes, Russia came away 4-3 on penalties to secure a place in the quarter-final.

Spain only just made it through the group, winning just one of their three games, and has fallen at the first hurdle in the knockout stages.

Chelsea midfielder, Fabregas was left out of the Spain squad for the tournament and had earlier blamed his club’s boss, Antonio Conte for that.

The former Arsenal star said he could not understand how a team with so many players from Barcelona and Real Madrid have exited the competition so early.

“I’m sad, I’m disappointed,” Fabregas said on BBC. ”I think we could have done more. There’s a lot of talent in this team.

“It’s a great team, you look at the names, and for me you have the best defence.

“Two Real Madrid players, two Barcelona players, you have (Sergio) Busquets, the best holding midfield player in the world.

“You have (Andres) Iniesta, (David) Silva, you cannot really find better names or better players in these positions.”

Spain sacked their manager, Julen Lopetegui just two days before their first game of the World Cup after he agreed to take over at Real Madrid.

And Fabregas said that undoubtedly, the sack would have had an impact on the players.

“It hurts,” he added. As a professional, if I was in this situation, it must confuse you, 100 per cent.”
