Uruguay defender, rose highest to thump home a powerful header in the 89th minute, to give his country a dramatic 1-0 win over Egypt, in a World Cup Group A game on Friday.

The tie looked likely to end goalless, before Gimenez met Carlos Sanchez’s free-kick.

Egypt, who are the first African nation to play at the tournament, were without Mohammed Salah, but played resiliently throughout the tie.

Uruguay struggled to impose themselves, although Luis Suarez missed good chances to open scoring and Mohammed El-Shenaway denied Edinson Cavani with a superb save.

The win takes the South Americans to three points in second place, behind hosts Russia who hammered Saudi Arabia 5-0 yesterday.
