Uruguay struggled to impose themselves, although Luis Suarez missed good chances to open scoring and Mohammed El-Shenaway denied Edinson Cavani with a superb save.
The win takes the South Americans to three points in second place, behind hosts Russia who hammered Saudi Arabia 5-0 yesterday.
