Egypt has been eliminated from the 2018 World Cup following their 3-1 defeat to hosts Russia on Tuesday night.

The North Africans came into their second group game, on the back of a 1-0 loss to Uruguay and were hoping to record points on the table, especially with the return of talisman Mohammed Salah.

However, the Russians raced into a three-goal lead, to take the tie away from the Egyptians.

They took the lead thanks to Ahmed Fathi’s own goal, before Denis Cheryshev and Artem Dzyuba also found the back of the net.

Salah pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute, but it was not enough to save his country from an early exit.

Egypt take on Saudi Arabia in their final fixture, while Russia battle Uruguay.
