Arsenal has sent a tribute to their former frontman, Olivier Giroud after France beat Croatia to win the World Cup, but skipped Chelsea as they mentioned clubs the player had played for.
France beat Croatia 4-2 on Sunday’s final to win the tournament for the second time in their history.
Giroud, who joined Chelsea in the January transfer window, did not, however, score a goal for France in Russia and didn’t even register a shot on target during the tournament.
But Didier Deschamps kept faith in the 31-year-old to spearhead France’s attack as his active role enabled Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe to flourish.
Giroud spent nearly six years at Arsenal and still remains well-regarded by the club and the majority of their supporters.
After France secured their victory over Croatia, Arsenal paid their former player a special tribute on Twitter.
In their post, Arsenal detailed Giroud’s journey from starting out with Grenoble’s reserve team, who were playing in the fifth tier of French football, to ending up in a World Cup final for his national side.
But Arsenal missed out a key detail as they failed to reference the striker’s move to Chelsea earlier this year.
“From Grenoble to Istres. From Tours to Montpellier. From Arsenal to a regular for #FRA.
“And now… a #WorldCup winner! “What a journey you’ve had, Olivier – we’re all so pleased for you.”
