Work according to specifications or get fired, Ikpeazu warns contractors

Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, on Friday, said his administration would fire any road contractor working below the agreed standard in the state. Ikpeazu spoke in Aba while inspecting failed roads and those under re-construction in the city, insisting that the government will not go for anything below good quality.

The governor said that his administration’s determination to ensure that contractors sustain quality standards on roads was informed by its desire to get the best for the people and residents of the state.

“I will deny any contractor that is not working according to specifications. My only business with contractors is that they do that which is right for our people.

“I do not have any attachment with any contractors; I am not a contractor and I will never be one. I want to use this opportunity to urge those that are doing well to continue because they will remain my friends.

“But those that are not doing what we asked them to do, we will show them the way out,” he said.

Ikpeazu, who inspected Ehere, Emelogu/Ngwa, Ochefu, Wicks, Owerrinta, Kamalu, Umuule/Tonimas and Owerri/Over-Rail roads under reconstruction, said he was satisfied with the work done so far.

He also charged Raycon and Company Limited to start the reconstruction of St. Michael’s, Jubilee, Hospital and Old Court roads immediately and to complete them quickly.

Ikpeazu told the contractor to work only during the night hours, to ensure that businesses of the people were not disrupted by the reconstruction work.

The governor said that every structure obstructing the reconstruction work would go down for the benefit of the people, ”no matter whose ox is gored.”

He assured people of Abia coming home for Christmas that they would return home to a state that was better than it was last year.

Ikpeazu said efforts were being made to make roads accessible for the returnees.
