Woodward insists United won’t buy players in January

Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward, has said the club will not splash out on “short-term fixes in January.

Financial results released on Tuesday, showed that United’s revenue dropped by almost £10million without Champions League football, in the first quarter of the financial year 2014-15.

Manager Louis van Gaal has been given a target of qualifying for the competition again, but Woodward says he might not be able to top the £151million they splashed out on transfers in the summer.

“We are not looking to enter the market for short-term fixes,” he told an investor conference call.

“However we have targets we are looking at for next summer. Should any of them become available in January, which is obviously rare, we will consider acting.

“But I think in terms of expectation setting, we all need to recognise that is a low probability.”
