Woman in court for assaulting man with soldiers in Benin


A 32-year-old woman, Grace Aruya,was on Thursday arraigned before an Egor Magistrates Court in Benin City, Edo State for allegedly assaulting a man, Martins Inalegwu, with the help of six men believed to be soldiers.

Aruya, who resides at No. 15B, Emagba Street, off S & T Uselu Road in Benin City, is standing trial on a three-count charge bordering on assault and abduction.

The prosecutor, ASP Osarentin Ogie told the court that the accused committed the offences on September 15 at Inalegwu’s residence.

“The accused brought six men, suspected to be soldiers, to beat Inalegwu, who eventually escaped from them.

“The men, who were armed with guns, had threatened to kill him.

“They also took away his 16-year-old son to an unknown destination, thereby making people living in the compound and the neighbourhood to flee,’’ Ogie said.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravened Sections 86, 249 and 351of the Criminal Code, Laws of the defunct Bendel State, 1976 as applicable in Edo.

Aruya however pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against her.

In his ruling, the Magistrate, Mr Alfred Iyoha, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N20, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Iyoha adjourned the case till October 6 for hearing.
