Woman arraigned for poisoning cousin’s fufu

One Alimot was yesterday remanded in prison custody by a Lagos State Magistrates Court in Ogudu, for allegedly poisoning her cousin’s cassava flour also known as fufu.

The Magistrate, Mrs Sule Amzat, said Alimont should be remanded in prison pending when she would be sentenced.

Alimot was arraigned on a two-count charge of maliciously administering poison with intent to harm and inflicting wounds.

When the charges were read, the suspect pleaded guilty.

The accused in her defence said her action was retaliatory because her cousin, Mrs Dorcas Kamoru destroyed the foodstuff she was supposed to use in preparing her family’s dinner.

Earlier, while testifying before the court, the prosecutor, Sgt Luck Ihiehie, said that Alimot committed the offences on September 4 at about 7.00 p.m. at Ikosi-Ketu area of the State.

Ihiehie told the court that the defendant poisoned the cassava flour also known as fufu the complainant prepared to be sold to the public.

“The complainant went home to prepare the `fufu’ for the next market day and she discovered that the taste and colour had changed,” Ihiehie said.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravened sections 241 and 244 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Magistrates, Mrs Sule Amzat ordered that the accused be remanded in prison pending when she would be sentenced.
