As electorates in Benue South senatorial district prepare for the poll today, February 20, to elect who represents them at the upper chamber of the National Assembly, some residents of the zone have affirmed that they would still want former Senate President, Senator David Mark to hold on to power till 2019.
Some of the residents, who spoke with our correspondent in Otukpo, described Mark’s opponent, Daniel Onjeh as a stooge being imposed on them by former governor of the state, George Akume and some Tiv leaders.
Speaking with a motorcyclist, who gave his name as Owie, he said even if the zone was to replace Mark, “it shouldn’t be somebody like Onjeh, who is regarded as Akume’s boy.”
For Mada Ajonye, a midle-aged woman, who sells onions inside the Otukpo market, “it would be disastrous for Idoma to vote out Mark at this critical time.”
She said those who were saying that Mark had not done anything for the zone were blind and ungrateful.
“My PVC is ready and Senator Mark has it. If you claim Mark has not done anything for us, you are either blind or ungrateful. My daughter, Susan was one of the beneficiaries of Mark’s Scholarship Scheme. I came into this business through the empowerment of Mark. Tell me why I won’t vote for him,” she said.
On his part, Ifeanyi, a graphic artiste said, “though I am not from Benue, I have been in this town for more than 15 years and can attest to the fact that Mark has done well for his people. His goodwill has affected me positively. Idoma people shouldn’t allow themselves to be deceived by these Tivs.”
Airing her views, a food vendor who would not want to mention her name averred that even if Mark contested 75 thousand times, he would still win.
“Chief Mark remains the answer. Even if he contests 75,000 times, he will still win. No one can dictate for us, not even the Tivs,” she said.
