All the markets in Enugu North Senatorial Zone were on Tuesday shut down between 6am to 12noon by a group, the Ordinary People of Nsukka, OPON. Their action, they said was a momentary appreciation to God for the safe return of the state Governor, Sullivan Chime.
Many traders had on arrival at the different markets in the zone been asked by market securities to wait till 12 noon before opening their stalls.
However, explaining further on the closure, OPON said the move was to express their gratitude to God for the return of Governor Sullivan Chime to the State.
Members of the group had used a trailer decorated with banners with the inscription, “We Welcome Sullivan,” accompanied by a long motorcade spanning over one kilometer, traversed the whole length and breath of the senatorial District chanting songs like: “He is alive amen, Sullivan is alive forever he is alive amen”……
The carnival passed through Ogbede headquarters of Igbo Etiti L.G.A, Obollo Afor, Udenu LGA headquarters, through Ogrute headquarters of Igbo Eze North LGA, Ibagwa-Aka headquarters of Igbo Eze South LGA and converged at the Nsukka City Stadium.
At the Udenu Local Government leadquarters, the Chairman, Dr Godwin Aboyi expressed great joy at the decision of the group to celebrate the Governor’s return in a grand style, attributing his safety to an act of God.
“The return of the Governor is worth celebrating because of his unprecedented achievements in the state”, Dr Aboyi remarked.
Addressing a mammoth crowd of jubilant members of the group and non members, the Director General of the organization Chief Onyema Idoko, said the group had to embark on the celebration to appreciate God for protecting the Governor during his long sojourn abroad, adding that rumour mongers who had peddled the rumour of the Governor’s death, should now hide their heads in the sand.
“In fact they should be ashamed of themselves now that the governor has returned home hale and hearty and more than strong as he was when he left the shores of Nigeria few months ago. We assure him of the solidarity of OPON and support in his effort to transform the entire Enugu state into the envy of other states in the federation.
In his remark, the Vice Chairman Enugu State Market Traders Association, Chief Festus Onugwu expressed joy at the Governor’s return, asserting that all the markets in Enugu North Senatorial Zone had to close for six hours as a mark of appreciation to God for saving the Governor whom he described as a friend to traders.
Chief Onugwu who is also chairman of Ogige Market Traders Association Nsukka pledged the unflagging support of the traders to the government of the state.
