Why we directed verification of staff, students of AAU – Edo Assembly Speaker, Adjoto

The Edo House of Assembly on Monday directed its Committee on Education to ascertain the actual students’ and staff population at the state-owned Ambrose Ali University (AAU), Ekpoma.

Speaker of the Assembly, Mr Kabiru Adjoto, announced the directive at plenary and said “the motive was to identify the challenges facing the institution.”

The speaker also urged the committee “to collaborate with appropriate departments at the Ministry of Education to investigate private schools identified to be operating below prescribed standards and proffer solutions aimed at addressing the decay in the education sector and to harmonise the views of stakeholders in the sector.

He directed that the committee should submit its report within two weeks.

Meanwhile, the lawmakers have commenced the clause-by-clause consideration of the bill for a law to provide for the establishment of Edo State Urban Water Corporation.

The house, which dissolved into the committee of the whole, following a motion by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Victor Edoror and seconded by Mr Sunday Osazemwinde (Ovia-North-East – APC) considered 10 sections of the bill.

The lawmakers adopted sections 1 to 10 with an amendment to section 3 of the bill to indicate that appointments into the corporation should be gender-based.

The amendment also stated that the appointments should reflect appropriate representation of the three senatorial districts in the state.
