A pan Igbo organization, Igbo Improvement Union (IIU) on Monday in Enugu renewed support for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Mr. Peter Obi, both of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This is coming ahead of the rescheduled February 23 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The group after its emergency meeting to review developments surrounding the postponement of the election by the Independent National Electoral Electoral Commission (INEC) enjoined all sons and daughters of Igbo extraction, both home and in the Diaspora, to remain patient and resolute, and to come out en-mass to vote Atiku and Obi on Saturday.

The group declared that the only way Nigeria can be re-launched into the comity of progressive nations of the world was to ensure victory for the PDP in the coming elections.

The Igbo Improvement Union said that it had since adopted the Vice Presidential aspiration of Mr Peter Obi as an Igbo project, saying that indigenes of Igboland in the seven Igbo states of Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Delta, Imo and Rivers state should ensure the effective mobilization and successful execution of the project.

In a statement signed by its President general, Chief Ugochukwu Agballah, the group commended the pro-Biafra group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for calling off earlier call for boycott of the elections, saying boycotting the poll would hurt the socio-economic and political wellbeing of the people.

Expressing confidence that the Atiku/Obi ticket would yield some benefits to Nigeria if elected, they however, reminded the duo on the need for attention on the plethora of infrastructure deficits in the southeast region.

They listed some of the infrastructure as railway network to link all state capitals in the southeast, reconstruction of Enugu-Port-Harcourt, Enugu –Onitsha roads, completion and the upgrading of Akanu Ibiam International airport, dredging of River Niger and political and economic restructuring of Nigerian state among others.
