Why Shehu Shagari rejected presidential residence – Grandson, Bello

The grandson of Second Republic President Shehu Shagari, Bello Shagari, has revealed why the ex-President refused his presidential residence when he was sworn-in 1979.

Bello, who is the President of Nigerian Youth Council disclosed that Shagari felt that the residence was too luxurious for him and his family.

The late ex-President’s grandson made the disclosure in a chat with Vanguard on Saturday.

He said: “When he was sworn-in as the President, he decided to take the Vice President’s residence instead of the one meant for him because he felt the residence meant for the President was too luxurious for him and his family.”

The former president, who won his second term election was, however, toppled by a coup d’etat that brought in Buhari as Military Head of State.
