Why Rohr almost dropped Moses

Moses Simon was very close to getting dropped from the Super Eagles starting line-up last month.

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, is a big fan of his speed and skillful style and gave him the shirt ahead of Ahmed Musa, in the wide right position.

However, Rohr was not impressed with Moses Simon’s reluctance to track back and help his fullback when defending.

The issue got on its head, after his inadequacies were exposed against South Africa in June, with captain John Obi Mikel absent to offer protection.

Officials told KweséESPN, that Rohr played the tape of the Bafana Bafana defeat time and time again and then gave him a dressing down in front of the team. Moses Simon was then given an ultimatum to track back or sit on the bench.

The threat worked a charm. Not only was the forward involved in two of the goals, he was also back helping Shehu Abdullahi and later, Elderson Echiejile.

“It wasn’t easy because I like to go forward and express myself,” Simon told KweséESPN after.

“But I had to do what the coach said.”
