Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Hon. Opeyemi Falegan, has lamented that the party is fast losing popularity in Ekiti State owing to alleged dictatorial tendencies of Governor Ayodele Fayose and his government’s refusal to carry the people along to ensure delivery of desired democracy dividends.
But Falegan said the situation could still be remedied before the official beginning of activities for the 2018 governorship election in the state if the governor could, as a matter of urgency, hearken to the voice and needs of the different communities with a view to ensuring peace and meaningful development.
In a statement made available to journalists in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, the United Kingdom based APC chieftain harped on peace as a necessary condition for development.
He said: “The one-day, one-trouble” being witnessed in the state ranging from recent disagreement between the state government and oil marketers and a stand off between the government and Ikere community over the relocation of a shrine among others is at variance with conditions meaningful development.
Falegan called on Governor Fayose to always embark a wide consultation over his administration’s policies and programmes to forestall ominous disagreement among the government, people and institutions at all times.
“The way and manner the present PDP-led administration in the state is losing its popularity as a result of self-induced but avoidable crises calls for great concern among the true party leaders and loyalists.
“Government and party cannot be separated since there could be no government without a party in democratic setting, especially in Nigeria as at today, hence the need for the governor to always fine tune his strategies from the beginning of implementation of every project being embarked on.
“The failure of any party in power begins with resistance or disapproval of its policies by the society. Therefore the present adminstration needs to change from its current dictatorial tendency of handling some sensitive issues to save the PDP in the state.
“The present PDP government in the state needs to move fast and right the wrongs. Those in government need to see this period as the only fortuitous time left to write their names in gold on the political history of the state, especially because of the party they represent now.
“Therefore, for a peaceful atmosphere in the state in order to guarantee sustainable development, government has a major role to play by always seeking peoples’ opinions and at same time listening to their suggestions.
“The purpose of government in power is to serve the people through mutual understanding and agreement on all issues since it is a democracy. This will at all times encourage the electorate to always have a trust in such government and the party it represent,” Falegan stated.
