A member of the Northern Elders Forum, Usman Bugaje has claimed that there is no oil producing state in Nigeria.
He said Nigeria is the only oil producing state, adding that no state in the country should lay claim to the natural resources.
According to Bugaje who was addressing the elders forum, the north is the only region in Nigeria that could lay claim to the oil because of its landmass.
He said 72% of the country’s landmass belongs to the north and by United Nation’s law, it is only the north that has the right to claim ownership of the oil.
According to him, “There is no oil producing state. The only oil producing state is the Nigeria state itself.
“Because the investments come from the Nigerian state; the territory belongs to the Nigerians state.
“It the measure of land mass that you have that will give you the mileage to the sea.”
He claimed that it is the landmass of a nation that determines how much of the ocean it would owe, noting that the north has made Nigeria to owe the oil producing areas because of its landmass.
“In the landmass of this country, as we know, that gives us that lounged of 200 miles and more into the ocean is because of that 72% landmass of this country which is the north.
“So what they claim is the offshore oil is actually for the north. If anybody should own it, is the north.
“So we should stop using these terms that make no sense at all. There are no oil producing states. It is only the Nigerian state that produces oil.”
