Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, has explained why the N1trillion fine slammed on MTN Nigeria was slashed to N330bn.
He said government decided to be flexible so as to attract investors and give investors confidence to invest more in the country.
Shittu who spoke in Abuja, yesterday, when the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Tukur Yusuf Burutai, visited him in his office, said “The MTN issue is an over-flogged issue as far as I am concerned.
“If anything, Nigerians should be happy that the matter has been laid to rest once and for all. The reduction was done in the interest of Nigeria.
“We need private sector to thrive just as they need us to thrive. We, in government, do not want to kill any business.
“All the decisions that have been taken on the MTN issue are on the best interest of Nigeria and Nigerians.”
Speaking, Burutai expressed hope that telecommunications services would be restored in the troubled towns and villages in the North-east soon.
He sought the collaboration of the ministry on use of latest technologies to track criminals in the country.
