Why Manchester United should have appointed Guardiola instead of Mourinho – Cantona

Former Manchester United star, Eric Cantona, has said he would have loved to see Pep Guardiola in charge of the club and not Jose Mourinho.

Cantona who arrived at Old Trafford 25 years ago, expects Mourinho to add to the two trophies he won in his first season, but claims that the Portuguese coach’s brand of football does not fit the “identity” of United in the same way that Guardiola’s would.

Guardiola’s Manchester City are currently eight points clear at the top of the Premier League.

“I just cannot understand why Manchester United takes on a manager who plays in a defensive way.

“He is very intelligent but he is playing in this defensive way which is not the identity of Manchester United.

“I love Mourinho as manager, and I said it before he arrived in Manchester. He’s very clever and he takes all the pressure on himself.

“He is very psychological. He has a lot of charisma. He won a lot of things and he will win a lot of things.

“But the football I played and the football (Sir Alex) Ferguson played, and (Sir) Matt Busby before, it was very creative football.

“It’s why I prefer the way Guardiola plays and I would prefer to have him as manager of Manchester United – it’s more logical.

“I prefer to watch when Barcelona play. I don’t watch Manchester City because it’s Manchester City, but I would love to play for a team managed by Guardiola.

“Of course, I follow Manchester United because it’s my club, my blood, more than a club. But I prefer more creative teams like Barcelona.”
