Why Kwara Government imposed 24-hour curfew on Governor’s town

The Kwara State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Share and Tsaragi communities due to a renewed age-long communal clash between the two towns.

The 24-hour curfew was contained in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Isiaka Gold, on Sunday.

The statement reads, “Following the current communal clash between Share and Tsaragi communities, Kwara State government hereby imposes a 24-hour curfew in both communities with immediate effect.

“The Kwara State government warns that anyone found with illegal arms and ammunition or otherwise found disrupting peace and public order in both communities will be dealt with in line with the laws of the land.

“While other security agencies, particularly the police, State Security Services, SSS, and the Civil Defence are already on ground, a detachment of the Nigerian Army has been drafted to ensure compliance with the curfew and maintenance of peace in both communities.”

Share, home town of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, is in Ifelodun Local Government Area, LGA, of the state and Tsaragi, a Nupe town in Edu LGA, have been enmeshed in age long communal dispute due to the lack of distinct demarcation between the two communities as they have both built into each other’s land.

The state government, in a bid to resolve the communal clash, planted trees as demarcations between the towns with a law that nobody from either side should carry out any activity there.

Trouble however started on Saturday when some youths from Share allegedly attempted to cut the trees but were stopped by Tsaragi people. This led to a brawl leaving no fewer than 10 people injured and hospitalised on both sides, though no death was recorded.

The State Police Command has reportedly dispatched a combine team of anti-riot police and regular police to the scene of the clash, so as to forestall any break down of law and order.
