A 22-year-old Indian man, Ravi Kumar, has been arrested after he reportedly forced his 19-year-old girlfriend to drink acid.
Kumar made the woman, identified only as Muskan drink acid over claims he was angry with her for allegedly cheating on him.
According to Hindustan Times, the victim has been hospitalized with a burnt throat and face.
She received around 20 per cent burns following the attack and is currently undergoing treatment in the emergency ward of AIIMS.
The woman, the sole bread winner of her family, works at a footwear manufacturing unit in Sangam Vihar. She lives with her mother and two siblings.
Reports say she is expected to survive even as the doctors are yet to find out the extent of damage done to her internal organs.
The suspect, a tailor, said he made her drink acid near her house in south Delhi’s Sangam Vihar, on Wednesday after which he escaped from the spot.
He, however, reportedly turned himself in at Sangam Vihar police station.
Confirming the incident, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP (South-East), Romil Baaniya, said Kumar told the police that he was angry as he suspected Muskan to be in a relationship with someone else.
He also feared that her family was set to engage her to someone else.
“The matter is being investigated,” the DCP was quoted to have said.
