Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, on Tuesday explained why he dissolved the 16 local government councils in the state.

The tenure of the council heads was supposed to expire on Thursday, November 10.

Ahmed said he took the decision due to their inability to discharge their statutory responsibilities to the people.

This was contained in a letter to the state House of Assembly informing the legislature of formal dissolution of the councils.

The governor’s letter read by the Deputy Speaker, Mathew Okedare, who presided over Tuesday’s plenary, said all the 16 councils failed in the discharge of their responsibilities in the last one year.

Ahmed said that the councils failed to execute meaningful projects in the last three years and unable to pay workers salary for months.

“I took this step following sustained complaints by the residents of poor performance of the local councils in discharging their statutory functions,” the governor said.

Ahmed informed the legislature of his intention to appoint caretaker committees to run the affairs of the councils.
