Why I cry whenever I’m abroad for official assignment – CBN governor, Emefiele

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele has disclosed that the pathetic situation of the Nigerian economy made him cry each time he travelled abroad and saw developments overseas.

He made the statement in Abuja while responding to questions from members of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Financial institutions during his screening in Abuja on Wednesday.

The governor pointed out that at the age of 57, he has seen steady developments of the country in the past, but the trajectory stopped abruptly as a result of non-compliance to government’s policies.

He said that no country grows if its citizens don’t obey policies, stating that Nigerians abhor disobedience to policies made by government.

“Distinguished Chairman of the Committee and members, I must tell you that each time I travel abroad and see developments there and remember my own country, I weep.”

“Some of the Asian tigers that we started together have developed past Nigeria.”

He vowed to implement the CBN policies to the letter in his second tenure, stating that the authority would sanction those who breach the laws irrespective of their status in the society.

In a well-attended screening committee sitting, Senators took turns to commend him over reforms he carried out during his first tenure.

Speaking after the meeting, Chairman of the Committee, Senator Rafiu Adebayo Ibrahim expressed satisfaction with the exercise, saying that he would turn in the report to the red chambers with immediate effect.

He was optimistic that the governor will be expeditiously confirmed in a week’s time.
