Why I am staying with Newcastle despite relegation – Benitez

Rafa Benitez has signed a three-year deal, to remain as manager of Newcastle, who were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season.

The Spaniard has also been handed total “control of footballing matters” at St James Park.

Benitez explained that he decided to stay, because of the warm reception he received from Newcastle fans.

The Magpies are looking to return to the top flight at the first attempt and will provide Benitez with transfer funds and revamp their scouting system. The former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss, will also not be forced to sell any players.

“It is a challenge, yes. I have won trophies. Now it is time for a new project, a new challenge. I can see the possibilities and the size of the club and the potential. Everything is massive and I want to be a part of it,” Benitez said.

“I am here because I am convinced we can go up next season, stay there and even win trophies.

“First thing reason for me to stay was the fans. The status of the club, and the future. I have seen all these things together.

“I could see these things every day, especially the last day. The fans, lots of positive things from day one. Also my family is in England and I wanted to stay here. I am really happy to be here.

“Transfers? Football business I will have responsibility. I have assurances we will have a strong team and a winning team. I will build a strong team. I am here because I am sure we can do it.

“I will take responsibility. From day on my relationship with Lee Charnley was really good. I have not seen a problem when I was asking for something. They have tried to give me what I wanted. They are positive about the future. Everything is done in a football way and I am a football man.”
