Everton were reluctant to sell Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea, because of the John Stones transfer saga two years ago. It is believed that both clubs have had frayed relationships since then.

Chelsea have lost the race to bring back Lukaku to Stamford Bridge, despite equalling Manchester United’s £75million offer for the 24-year-old .

Lukaku had appeared set for a return to Chelsea this summer. But United swooped in and stole the Belgium striker from under their noses, after completing a medical in Los Angeles.

It has, however, emerged that Everton were happy to do business with United rather than Chelsea, especially as they would be getting Wayne Rooney.

Everton were angry after talks of a big-money transfer unsettled Stones when they were unwilling to sell. The defender was eventually sold a year later to Manchester City.
