Why EFCC has refused to release Metuh

DAILY POST has just received information that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is insisting that the Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh, who is currently being held by the commission over some allegations that are yet to be officially made public, will not be left off the hook unless he issues a statement required of him as a suspect.

A source privy to the investigation told DAILY POST that Metuh had insisted on having his lawyers and close aides around before he could issue any statement. The source further revealed that Metuh’s insistence was to ensure that he follows his lawyers’ instructions as the investigation progresses.

He said, ‘’honestly, the man has requested to see his lawyer before writing his statement and those in charge at the EFCC have refused him access to his lawyer. I think it’s reasonable that an individual under investigation, no matter the weight of the offence be granted access to consult his lawyers. I’m surprised that this is happening in a democratic dispensation.’’

Reacting, however, in a telephone conversation with DAILY POST, the EFFC Spokesperson, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said, ”the man is still under investigation and until investigation is over, we cannot release him.’’

It will be recalled that Metuh was on Tuesday invited by the EFCC over some allegations that are yet to be made public.

Metuh’s Special Assistant, Richard Ihediwa, in a statement, said, “Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission arrived the Abuja home of the spokesman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh this morning, inviting him to follow them to the commission’s headquarters.’’

He, however, stated that no tangible reason was given on why Metuh was invited; stating that the commission claimed it was a friendly invitation.
