The reason behind President Muhammadu Buhari’s cancellation of his Rwanda trip has emerged.
Buhari cancelled his scheduled trip to Kigali, Rwanda because enough consultation was not made before the Federal Executive Council, FEC, approved the signing of the framework agreement for establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area, according to statement from the Nigerian Government on Sunday.
The FEC presided over by Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo last Wednesday had given a nod to the signing of the agreement while Buhari was on a visit to Yobe State.
The approval entails that Buhari would have signed the agreement during the extraordinary summit of the African Union holding on Tuesday, March 21.
But the President put off his trip to Rwanda last night.
The spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tope Elias-Fatile, explained the President’s decision on Sunday.
He wrote in a press release, “President Muhammadu Buhari has cancelled his trip to Kigali, Rwanda to attend an Extra-Ordinary Summit of the African Union on Tuesday, March 21, to sign the framework agreement for establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area.
“This is to allow more time for input from Nigerian stakeholders.”
