Why Arsenal cannot win Premier League – Vieira

Former Arsenal captain, Patrick Vieira, has said that in as much as manager, Arsene Wenger’s stringent transfer policy is helpful to the club, there might be need for reinforcements following the north London side’s lacklustre start to the Premier League campaign.

Haven lost their opening game to Liverpool at the Emirate stadium, Arsenal played out a goalless draw with champions Leicester City on Saturday.

Arsene Wenger has come under heavy verbal attack from fans and media as who are expecting him to invest into the squad which finished second last campaign.

Viera told British media, “I quite admire that, in the world where some clubs have so much money, they go and buy players who are £40 million and are worth £10 million.”

Though Wenger has not been too busy in the transfer window which closes on September 1, he had added three players to his squad which include midfielder Granit Xhaka, defender Rob Holding and striker Takuma Asano.

Vieira, who is currently managing New York City FC in the US added, “But on the other side the team is not doing as good as it used to and you need to win football matches.

“They’ve been disappointing, losing games they should have won.

“My generation had lots of physically strong players. In this last five or six years, Arsenal went more with this type of mobile, technical players.

“Now when I watch Arsenal, yes they play good football but I just have a feeling they are missing something – the physical presence, the personality, this is what they’re missing.”
