The World Health Organisation this morning in Abuja formally declared Nigeria Ebola free, 42 days after the last infected person was given a clean bill of health or two incubation periods without any new confirmed case.

The announcement was made in Abuja at a joint press conference by the World Health Organisation and the Federal Ministry of Health.

Announcing the certification of the country as Ebola free, the WHO country representative, Rui Gama Vaz said ; “The virus is gone for now. The outbreak in Nigeria has been defeated. This is a spectacular success story that shows to the world that Ebola can be contained.

Nigeria becomes the second country to have been certified after Senegal, which had its own certification announced on Friday.
