Wenger wants Arsenal penalty taker resolved

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has hailed his side’s “positive” display at Hull City, but says the confusion around their penalty takers must be sorted out.

With the Gunners 1-0 up in the first half thanks to Alexis Sanchez’s flicked finish, they were awarded a penalty after Jake Livermore was shown a straight red for blocking a goal-bound shot with his arm. Alexis saw his effort palmed away.

Although Arsenal went on to win 4-1, Wenger says he is surprised Santi Cazorla did not take the spot kick.

“Santi was down to take it,” he told the BBC. “I don’t know why it did not happen, they have pecking order, it was not planned for Sanchez to take it.

“I want to know what happened and for it not to happen again. Overall anyone can miss a penalty, we have to accept that.”

Wenger however feels the missed penalty sharpened his team’s focus, after a 1-1 draw in the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

“I feel overall it was a positive performance after playing away in the Champions League and away again today,” the Frenchman added.

“We started well, dominated and were fluent. They defended well but overall we managed to score the goal then after the missed penalty we had to be serious and score the next goal.”
