Wenger should be appointed as England coach – Paul Parker

Former England striker, Paul Parker has advised the English Football Association to see Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger as the ideal candidate to carry the England team forward.

The Three Lions have been unable to compete with Europe’s top sides over the years and are currently searching for a new coach after former boss, Sam Allardyce’s spell in charge came to sudden end following allegations of corruption.

England has suffered a succession of failed experiments since Sir Bobby Robson guided his troops to the World Cup semi-finals in Italy in 1990, with ex-Manchester United player Parker involved.

Gareth Southgate is currently sitting on the hot sit with the responsibility of leading England through their World Cup qualifiers.

The former England striker is of the opinion that the man currently in charge of Premier League title hopefuls Arsenal is the best fit to inherit the reins if he were to walk away from the Emirates at the end of the season when his current contract expires.

He wrote in his column for Eurosports, “People keep talking about Eddie Howe, but I’d like to see him have a run or success at Bournemouth, they should leave the young kid alone.

“He had a bad experience at Burnley, he’s probably still getting over that.

“We have to stop naming someone because they are English. We have to look for talent. If it’s a foreign manager, find someone who likes England, who respects England.

“If we are looking for someone to fill a gap for a while, we should be hoping that Arsene Wenger retires from Arsenal and ask him to come and do that job. He will want to do it his way and tell the FA what he needs from them, not the other way round.

“If I was Southgate, I wouldn’t be assuming I’d get the England job if I beat Scotland. That’s ridiculous. What about Slovenia and Slovakia, beating them four or five nil? We need to produce that type of performance, it’s not just about the winning.”

England will face Scotland at Wembley in their next 2018 World Cup qualifier on Friday, before they take on Spain in a friendly on Tuesday.
