Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has stated that the club cannot depend on only young talents like Nigeria forward Alex Iwobi and Spain’s Hector Bellerin to lift major trophies both in domestic league and in Europe.
20-year-old Iwobi, came to limelight for Arsenal last season after he broke into the first team and scored two goals and is now a regular in the Nigerian national team, while Bellerin, 21, was promoted into the first team last two seasons and has become a regular for the Gunners ever since.
Unlike before, the current Arsenal squad is a mix of older and young players and Wenger told club website that it is important to have this balance in order to achieve success.
According to the longest serving manager in the Premier League, “To be a real football player, you need to be 23 years old because you have learned your job, you can have a great game and after, sometimes an average game.”
“You can have one or two exceptional talents, like at the moment we have Hector Bellerin and Iwobi, but the core of the team has to be from 23 to 30.
“If you look at the national teams, you never win a tournament with a young team, because it’s more mental at some stage to win something big.
“You need to have a certain level of experience.”
