Wenger confirms Vermaelen will remain Arsenal captain

Arsenal Wenger has confirmed that Thomas Vermaelen, will remain Arsenal captain for the upcoming season.

The Belgium international has been linked with a move away from the Emirates, amidst questions over his fitness and role in the team, but Wenger is not ready to replace him yet.

Vermaelen has aggravated a lower back injury, which will see him miss the beginning of the new campaign and has stayed back at the London Colney to undergo treatment, as the rest of the squad go on their Asia Tour.

Wenger confirmed: “He had a back problem. He came back with it and couldn’t practice until now. We don’t know how long he will be out for. There is nothing behind that at all.

“Will he stay as captain? It depends. I cannot stick with him now because I think he will miss the start of the season.

“But certainly he will still be the club captain.”

Mikel Arteta will lead the Gunners in Vermaelen’s absence.
