Former Arsenal striker, Ian Wright, believes the club and the manager Arsene Wenger, are heading towards a painful break up.

The Frenchman’s position has come under intense scrutiny lately from supporters, who have seen the team fail to take advantage this season and win the Premier League.

Instead, Leicester City are now 11 points ahead of Arsenal at the top, while their North London rivals, Tottenham, occupy the second spot.

The Gunners were also dumped out of the FA Cup last weekend by Watford, effectively ending their chances of silverware this season.

Although Wenger is understood to retain the board’s control, Wright says it can only end one way.

Writing in his Sun column, he said: “It hurts so much to even think it — but it feels like Arsene Wenger and Arsenal are heading for divorce.

“Judging from the way the fans have reacted over the past week, that’s the impression I get. I’m sure when that day arrives it will all be amicable and friendly, although it does leave a horrible feeling in the stomach right now.”
