The Department of Weights and Measures in the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, disclosed on Thursday that it has nabbed 10 fuel stations under-dispensing fuel in Plateau and parts of Nasarawa states.

The Chief Legal Metrology Officer of the Department, Mrs Cordelia Nwachukwu, who led the team of inspectors, disclosed this to journalists in Jos shortly after inspecting some petrol stations in Jos and Bukuru metropolis.

Nwachukwu said that the team had inspected over 60 petrol stations in the two states.

According to her, “We are here on a surveillance exercise and have so far visited over 60 filling stations in parts of Nasarawa and Plateau states.

“Some of the fuel stations are doing well, but we have discovered that 10 of them that are dispensing the product below expectation.

“We have made them correct their pumps and placed them under severe observation as part of the first punitive measures to take as provided by our Act,” she said.

The team leader said the erring filling stations would be placed under close watch and would be made to face the full wrath of the law if caught again.

Nwachukwu also warned tanker driver against diversion of petroleum products, saying that anyone caught would be sanctioned.

The official also admonished all marketers dealing in weights and measures in all sectors of the economy, particularly trade and investment, to ensure fairness, equity and accuracy when dealing with Nigerians.

“We have realised that most Nigerians don’t get the exact worth of what they pay from marketers, and so, we want to put an end to this anomaly because it is a form of corruption.

“The present government is working round the clock to end corruption and we want such sanity in all transactions that concerns weights and measures,” she said.

The Chief Legal Metrology Officer called on Nigerians to be on the alert and report any marketer who attempts to shortchange them to the department.

”We have offices and trained officials in almost all the states of the federation.

“I urge Nigerians to report any marketer who attempts to cheat them for necessary action,” she stressed.
