The President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, has vowed to mobilise workers to resist any attempt to frustrate the current moves to give workers an improved minimum wage.
He made the vow while delivering his address at the opening ceremony of the 40th anniversary of NLC which held in Abuja on Monday.
According to him, the current demand for the review of the current N18, 000 minimum wage was borne out of the current reality of higher cost of living, free fall of Naira, and high cost of goods and services. Hence it was desirable and inevitable to oppose those seeking to slow down an upward review of the minimum wage.
“Let me use this medium to serve notice to those who seek to slow down and frustrate the process of review of the national minimum wage that they will be resisted in like manner as our predecessors did.
“We are prepared to deal with employers especially governors who deny workers and pensioners their salaries and pensions. Workers and pensioners and their families will not give them any further political support, especially their support,” he said.
DAILY POST reports that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, at the same event assured workers across the country that the federal government will announce a new minimum wage by September this year.
