The National leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has distant itself from the plight of its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, saying the party will not provide sureties he needs to meet his bail conditions.
The party said its stance was due to the fact that the embattled spokesman was being prosecuted for offences that have nothing to do with it.
Speaking with Punch on Friday in Abuja, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Alhaji Abdullahi Jalo, said it would be wrong to expect that the party would provide sureties for Metuh since it did not benefit from the money he allegedly collected from the former National Security Adviser, Lt Col. Sabo Dasuki (retd.).
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is accusing Metuh of allegedly collecting N400m from Dasuki, an offence it described as money laundering for which he is currently being prosecuted.
However, the embattled spokesman admitted collecting the money but said it was for a job he did for the former President, Goodluck Jonathan.
With court granting Metuh bail, there have been anxiety on how to produce the sureties.
But Jalo, said it is not the place of the party to be involved in the search for Meuh’s sureties.
“Metuh didn’t represent the party in the alleged crimes he’s being prosecuted. The party didn’t benefit from the alleged crime.
“So, he is going to look for sureties himself. We won’t be involved. He would carry his own cross alone, without the party being involved,” Jalo said.
