We will not interfere in Assembly crisis – Ekiti State Police Command

The Ekiti State Police command yesterday declared that it would not interfere in the inter-party crisis rocking the state’s House of Assembly.

The command said contrary to an alarm raised by the factional speaker of the House of Assembly, Adewale Omirin, it is not planning on arresting All Progressives Congress, APC, members of the House.

Adewale had raised the alarm that Governor Ayodele Fayose was planning to use the police to arrest them.

But spokesman for the command, Mr Victor Babayemi, who spoke in Ado Ekiti, said the crisis engulfing the Assembly was purely a political issue and the command would continue to monitor the unfolding drama closely without meddling or supporting either of the factions in the interest of peace.

Babayemi recalled the command had been professional since the crisis started on November 20, 2014 and that the Police would only step in if the lawmakers behaved in a manner that infringed on the laws of the land.

He said: “This command has been handling the assembly’s crisis in a more professional way since it started. We are not in any way interested because it is purely a political issue.

“Nigeria Police is not a political organisation, so we are neither being instigated to arrest them nor to harass them. It is a political matter and it has to be settled politically.

“But as a law enforcement agency, we owe it a duty to protect the lives and property of the citizens and we won’t shy away from this responsibility,” he said.

He however warned the lawmakers to operate within the confines of the laws as much as the command was not opposed to the idea of having two factions in the assembly.
