The Police in Enugu State have arrested one of the suspects in connection with the recent murder of the traditional ruler of Nkerefi, in Nkanu East Local Government Area, Igwe Peter Onuoha.
DAILY POST recalls that a number of armed men had stormed the community in the early hours of 11th July, 2015 and murdered the monarch, alongside four other villagers.
According to the police, the suspect, Sunday Agbara Edwin, said they murdered the traditional ruler owing to his wickedness as he was killing and throwing people into the river.
Spokesman of the police in Enugu State, DSP Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the arrest, disclosed that “the suspects numbering about six, after perpetrating the dastardly act took to their heels to unknown destination to avoid being caught.
“The state police command, through its operatives of the homicide, swung into action which took them out of the state in search of the suspects and on that note, through a well gathered intelligence, nabbed one of the kingpins at Ebu village in Illah Oshimili Local Government Area of Delta State”.
The police quoted the suspect as already regretting his action, and to have confessed that “we are not happy with what the monarch is doing in our community.
“The monarch is violating human rights by killing people and throwing them into the river and also collecting people’s land by force in the community and if you oppose him, he will deal with you.
“Hence, we organized ourselves and visited him on that day, as well as those supporting him. Two shots were fired on that day but not by me. I only went there with cutlass, although I never knew that it would have resulted into this kind of situation. I am truly sorry about the whole thing and I also regret the act”.
Amaraizu added that the suspect was helping the operatives in the full scale investigations that had commenced with a view to unmasking the remaining members of the gang.
