We lack funds to keep Benue State clean – Ediga Akpa

The General Manager of the Benue state Environmental Sanitation Agency (BENSESA), Mr Ediga Akpa has said that the agency lacks the ability to create a green and serene environment in the food basket state.

Akpa, told DailyPost on Tuesday in Makurdi, the Benue State capital that the agency could not embark on sensitive projects due to paucity of funds.

“Due to paucity of funds, we cannot embark on projects that can make the state clean and habitable,’’ he said.

According to him, the agency needed funds to procure equipment to clean and sanitised the state. He also expressed regrets that it had depended on “the meagre revenue it generated in 2012, till date’’.

He added that the agency lacks staff, adding that less than 16 members of staff carry out the task of keeping the entire state clean.

Akpa said the agency would be needing at least 1,000 workers to provide a habitable environment for the people of the state.

He noted that BENSESA was a revenue-generating agency,. He equally said that if properly funded, it would generate huge revenue, and employment opportunities for the people.

The General Manager warned the people against dumping refuse in drainages, saying that it could cause flooding and lead to outbreak of diseases.

While explaining that sanitation was the responsibility of both the government and the citizenry, he emphasised that all and sundry must obey sanitation rules or face sanctions. Akpa commended the Neighbourhood Environmental Sanitation Committee (NESA) for its effort at sensitizing the people on the need for habitable environment.
