We intercepted truck load of army uniform in Enugu border, not the Police – NATFORCE Director

The Enugu State Director of National Task Force, NATFORCE, Chief Obinna Onyekwelu, says contrary to earlier media reports, his men deserved praise for intercepting a truck load or army uniform at a border town in the State and not the police.

Onyenkwelu told journalists that after the arrest of the bus at Amalla, NATFORCE handed over the items recovered, which included Indian hemp wrapped in a polythene bag, bales of fairly used cloths and 16 bundles of army camouflage uniform, to the police for investigation.

“Since the inception of NATFORCE, we have left no stone unturned in our operations at complementing efforts of the police in combating illegal importation and smuggling of goods, small arms, ammunitions and light weapons into the country”, he stated.

He recalled that NATFORCE had in 2011 at Obimo in Nsukka LGA during a stop and search operation, intercepted a bus conveying cartons of live cartridges, adding that “again, just last year NATFOPRCE apprehended 21 suspected Boko Haram members with army uniforms at Amalla along Enugu- Markurdi express way.

“In 2012, NATFORCE tracked a full lorry load of arms and ammunition from Ghana through Seme border into Nigeria and we intercepted it at Onitsha toll gate before handing it over to Anambra State police for investigation”.

Onyenkwelu said NATFORCE will continue to work with the police to check activities of illegal importers and smugglers of goods, arms and light weapons into the country. “We are making efforts to create a crime free environment.

By the time NATFORCE is at all local government areas, we will surpass these achievements”, he assured. Comrade Onyenkwulu, however, appealed to the Federal Government to empower NATFORCE with necessary gadgets and operational vehicles to carry out its operations in the country.

Meanwhile, sources hinted that the Aba based business man fingered in the supply of the army uniform has been arrested by Enugu State Police command.

DAILY POST learnt that the man, who gave his name as Obi Nzuegbu, has been in the illegal transaction of military uniforms for a while, with the help of a military officer, simply identified as Monday, who takes delivery of the military camouflage in Kaduna.
