Aminu Tambuwal
Yoruba socio-cultural group, Odua People’s Congress (OPC), Tuesday denied media report that it has reached an agreement with the embattled Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Tambuwal to provide him security after his security details were withdrawn in the wake of his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
It was insinuated in a news report that the OPC dispatched about 60 of its men to provide security for Tambuwal.
OPC leader, Dr. Frederick Faseun, in a release yesterday denied the report, claiming that there has been no meeting point between the OPC and Tambuwal, who it accused of usurping a position that was zoned to the South west in 2011. He added that “OPC is a socio-cultural organisation dedicated to protecting and pushing the interest of the Yoruba people who dominate the South-West”
Faseun said the organisation had protested in June 2011, when Tambuwal mounted the seat of Speaker, describing him as “an usurper who hijacked the position since 2011, and should immediately cede the position to a Yoruba legislator in the lower chamber.
“Back in 2011, we told Tambuwal that he was a usurper of a seat reserved for the Yoruba, and asked him to vacate the position. But he refused. No way can we now extend any form of assistance to him,” the statement said.
“And we still maintain our stand that Tambuwal should hand over the position of Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives to the Yoruba people, who have an authentic claim to the position.”
Fasuen said if not for the maturity and restraint displayed by the Southwest, Tambuwal’s action would have led to serious crisis as it did not just violate the federal character enshrined in the constitution but also stands as a slap on the Yoruba people.
“OPC and Yoruba people believe this is the time to right the wrong of the last three years, by letting the post of Speaker devolve back to its rightful owners, the South-west.
“And we have Yoruba sons and daughters in the lower chamber that are quite capable of discharging that responsibility,” Fasheun stressed.
