Ahead of the February general elections, the Labour Party (LP) has denied adopting President Goodluck Jonathan as its candidate for the poll.
Speaking at a press conference held in Akure, Ondo State, the National Chairman of the Party, Alhaji Abdulkadri Abdusalam said the party had been watching the activities of the presidential candidates for the poll and that it would take a decision on who to support after the debate among the contestants.
Besides, Abdulsalam also said the call for the extension of the election by its Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT), Chief Dan Iwuanyawu, is his ‘personal opinion’ and not a true representation and position of the party’s executives.
The LP Chairman urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to succumb to any group of people who were calling for the postponement.
He said that Iwuanyawu, a former National Chairman of the party and now the BoT chair, was ‘on his own’ for such statement, adding that the party had already distanced itself from such talk.
“It was his own personal opinion, he did not represent the position of our party.
“Dan Iwuanyawu didn’t have the right to speak for the party on the postponement of the election.
“Such sensitive and quality statement should only emanate from the office of the National Chairman”, he said.
It will be recalled that last Tuesday in Abuja, Chief Dan Iwuanyawu had advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the February general election to enable eligible voters collect their Permanent Voters’ Cards. .
