Gen Muhammadu Buhari
Former Head of State and presidential candidate of Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.) has lambasted members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for holding on to power in the most manipulative ways, affirming the party is an ‘unholy merger.’
The former military General said this at the CPC Interactive Dialogue with its elected representatives that held on Monday in Abuja.
According to Buhari, Nigeria had been in the grip of bad governance under the PDP-led government since 1999, stating that it had manipulated relevant government institutions to remain in power. Speaking further, he stressed that the only way to oust PDP was to build a strong and broader merger.
Buhari said: “The country is in the grip of a bad government whose purpose is to hold on to power by hook or by crook; preferably by crook”.
His words: “PDP does not need merger or alliance. They are already merged and are in alliance with Police, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the judiciary, and also with the Nigerian National petroleum Corporation, NNPC, and pension funds.
“The country is tired of PDP. We are tired of oppression, corruption and insecurity.”
While expressing hope that the merger was the only political instrument that can eliminate PDP from the political scene, Buhari urged the political class to embrace and actualize the merger currently being pursued by opposition parties to rescue the country from the grip of PDP.
He said: “I believe merger is the only way to prevent the continuation of this bad governance. The political class is in one accord that the only way to stabilize the nation is for the opposition to merge and face the ruling party.”
He also lauded the party’s elected representatives for their victorious outing at the 2011 general elections without any form of electoral malpractice, describing them as face of CPC.
